It’s over mate
This is one of those days where you assess and compare yourself against the goals you defined at the beginning of the year. Some people might think this is kinda silly but to me it has always worked quite well so here is version of it. This is not about a bunch of good stuff but a bit of everyting. I’ve failed many times already(this doesn’t sound good but you know what I mean) in several points that were on my list before, however the good thing is that you come to know what you are made of and what you can get out of all these happenings… i’d say… this is the good stuff out the bad stuff 
2008 was definitely a milestone in my stay in Aussieland, however right now It seems 2009 will be even more radical (you always say this… i know). Anyway, this year offered great opportunities to grow as person, professional and to look forward with more clarity.
I started 2008 in Peru with my uni fellows in one of the best spots you can find all around Peru, Mancora beach. Overall, I spent two great months in Peru (from Dec’07 to Jan’08) and even though I thought it was gonna be enough, it wasn’t.
I got back to Melbourne on the 2nd of February and the feeling quite special. I wouldn’t call this place home yet but I felt like being back to an atmosphere I know pretty well and a set of rules I have become very familiar with… if this is your definition of “home”, call it “home” then.
In March I went to Tasmania with Thibault, Farid and Hugo, three French guys I know from RMIT… well only Thibault is from there and I met the other two through him on the way to Devonport. The Tasmanian trip was just unreal, it’s one of these trips that you never forget because you get to experience different stuff jammed in very short time. The trip was only for 4 days but it was enough to put Tassie on top of my favourites list.
I can’t remember what happened in April….. I just looked at my photos to help me out and found another big Trip, Wilsons Promontory. This trip was fully organised by who writes this blog and was in summary a stunning experience. At the beginning and specially the departure day was kinda chaotic cos I had to pick up the rented mini-van and do a presentation at RMIT at almost the very same time. Apart from that the trip was as smooth as making steamed rice. The fun was more than bonded and photos are plenty, some of them are on flickr and in this blog too. Uni had already started and became a bit tough but it didn’t really matter since I was doing alright so I ended up taking it easy till the exams.
May was a month of sports. I became fan of squash thanks to Thibault and also due to the absence of tennis partners, plus my constant procrastination to look for them. I also got the chance to play badminton and a work mate bought me a Yonex badminton racquet from Indonesia

June was the end of my Master in Business and Information Technology and we had quite a lot celebration parties, each one better then the previous one We had this party at Cho Gao, an Asian pub across the road from the state library. That month RMIT also offered a seminar day where students about to finish their studies got together to become familar with the alumni network, the ways RMIT help International Students to go back home, pathways to remain in the country (legally of course) and more. That day I met Dewinta, a friend who I took few subjects with.
In July, Quique, Javier and myself did the only trip together out of Melbourne. The gang headed this time towards the east, more precisely to Ballarat and few other towns beyond it. Initially we thought we could reach Halls gap (Grampians ranges) however would’ve taken us too much time which would’ve meant less time to enjoy the scenery and naure. July was definitely one of the most exciting months of 2008 just because of the mind-blasting trip to Sydney with Adeline, Nerida and Sally. We visited the typical icons such as the Opera house, the harbour bridge, the blue mountains, bondi beach, manly beach and more. The trip went for only 4 days again but… what a 4-day trip!!, it was literally full-on that when I got back to Melbourne I felt like breaking appart of happiness and tireness… in this order ha.
I was already in Holidays and working full-time while I was free of studies when the Master of Commerce came to my life hahaha. Alright there’s so much hype in this but I’ll leave it like this, ha!. The Master of Business IT was for 1.5 years and if you are thinking to stay in Australia longer you usually take another course to extend your stay and then accomplish the at-least-two-year study requirement. Well the most suitable course for me was this Master in Commerce offerec by RMIT University since it was quite open in a sense that there ain’t much restrictions, so you could easily take subjects from business, IT, marketing, logistics, finance, economics, accounting, etc., as a matter of fact, I did this exactly. So yeah, in August I went back to RMIT but this time not as MBIT student but as MCOM student… what a change!!!
In terms of party, August and September (my fav month :p) were party months. Most of my friends went back home so we had several small parties here and there cheering up and giving best wishes to everybody for the end of a stage… at least for some of use. Also in September I celebrated my birthday and the farewell of Adeline. RMIT organised a trip to Mt. Buller ( a sky resort) and I asked if I could invite friends… since I got green light for it I told Amanda, Khristianne, Daniel, Mehdi and Natalia to come along. Nati stayed at my place since she lives in Geelong (a town out of Melbourne). We then took a taxi to the city at around 4am and jumped straight to the bus where Amanda and the others were waiting for us. The day was a big Wow! It was my 2nd time at the snow and this time I could really enjoy it “more”. We all promised to come back the next week but in the end, no one could make it In September also tried heaps of Lebanese food. Muslim finish the Ramadam tradition that month so after it there is big food parties everywhere. Amanda took me to one on Sydney Rd. and tried really great stuff… I’m kinda becoming a big fan of arabic food.
October was apparently a dead cos I don’t photos taken that month, which is something very odd I can quickly remember Quique’s B’day and Javier’s b’day but no more than that. I guess I became more conscious about studies and my very last semester at RMIT University that I forgot to party and take photos (still can’t fully believe this but let’s leave it by now).
November started with an amazing event. The Melbourne cup, again the company I work for arranged everything to stay in a coporate box and enjoy the races…..weelll…. enjoying the races… not really but still you get to spend some time with your work fellows and talk about whatever except work stuff :). The day was great and unlike the last year I didn’t even win a penny :(. The atmosphere for “the cup” is just so overwhealming, if you do no know what I am talking about, the Melbourne cup is a horse racing event that puts the country on hold. December was another great month for me cos I made difficult decision and bought a digicam that is meant to be the best digicam ever in history and it is indeed since it’s not cheap and ’s got quite a lot of features that normal digicams lack of. I became fan of photograhy and went out with several indonesian friends to take photos and to learn from them. Some of them are back home already and some others are still in the country, i hope I can keep in touch with everyone so we go out again
Wow I just heard few fireworks in the city. I’m at my room on a apartment on the 4th floor and from up here you’ve got this stunning sight of the city. It could definitely be a great spot to spend the new years however i’ve got an even better plan. A friend from RMIT invited me to a hawaiian party tomorrow 31st so I’ll be celbrating the new years eve in a different way :D… can’t wait!! December has also meant the offical end of my study period in RMIT, my graduation and also I started the permanent residency application process. I’ll talk about this later but as an update I can tell a week and a half ago my permanent residency visa application was lodged, three days ago I got the confirmation email from the department of immigration and yesterday I got the called Bridging visa which allows me to remain in the country while my visa application is processed. This doesn’t mean I’ll be accepted or rejected but just a way to reamin lawful in the country.
Alrigthy!!, It’s time to close this blog for this year wishing y’all an awesome new years eve party and the best for the coming 2009. Be greatful for what you have received and keep it in mind all the time, do not regret of things if you cannot take something positive out of it. Set goals for the new year and figure out how you’re going to achieve them. My list is half completed so it’s time for me to finish it.

Feliz Navidad
Aca ya es 24 y en menos de 7 horas es navidad. Estos días me he reunido con varios amigos en diferentes momentos para festejar la graduación de las dos maestrías y las fiestas. Además he estado ocupado con el tema de la visa de residencia que ya está en proceso. Cada uno de estos temas serán cubiertos en los días que vienen.
Este año a estado lleno de bastantes saltos y movimiento, eso me ha gustado y espero que el próximo sea mejor. Las cosas han salido bastante bien a lo planificado y espero que sigan asi, como siempre digo, es solo cosa de ponerle ganas y buena voluntad a tus proyectos…. solo eso.
Bueno pues, la misa de navidad empieza en una hora. Este post es sólo para desearles una muy felíz navidad.
Y el ingeniero se gradúa de master
El gran día ha llegado, el día en que te colocas la toga de nuevo y pasas un momento y tal vez el último con la mayoría de los compañeros de maestría. Han sido 2 años de constante aprendizaje y mucho valor agregado. Estoy contento y si bien es cierto por un lado estoy satisfecho por lo logrado, por otro me doy cuenta que esto no ha acabado y que hay que seguir estudiante… de manera diferente claro.
Para los que no saben cómo fue esto de la maestría en Australia, les hago el resumen. En febrero del 2007 empecé la maestría en negocios y tecnologías en RMIT University, RMIT significa Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, como institució educativa tiene 120 años y ha sabido darse su lugar como universidad seria. No está entre las top top de Melbourne porque su base de investigación (numero de estudiantes y projectos de PHD) no es tan grande pero si se ha enfocado en usar la experiencia ganada en TI para abarcar otras áreas como negocios, logística, marketing e sobre todo ingeniería. Esta maestría es una mezcla muy interesante de el mundo de TI y los negocios en donde se cubrieron temas esenciales como estrategias de negocio y crecimiento, soporte a las decisiones, generación del conocimiento corporativo, inteligencia de negocios enfocado a obtener ventajas competitivas y comparativas, etc. Es una maestría en la que si bien se tocan temas de TI, no es técnico en absoluto. Creo que en 2 años sólo hubieron 2 curosos que incluían laboratorio. De los cursos que más me gustaron estan: IT strategy, Knowledge management, IT project management, Mangement of the computer resources, Accounting for managing decissions y Globalisation business and IT.
Esto terminó en Julio de este año y desde entonces he estado llevando 6 meses de estudios para convalidar y sacar la maestría en Comercio como doble grado. La palabra comercio tal vez no está bien puesta dado que no es lo que se nos viene a la mente sino más bien es el títule de una de las maestrías más flexibles que hay, en la que uno mismo arma su programa y enfoque de acuerdo a sus intereses. Por ejemplo yo elegí Sistemas empresariales, Seguridad de Sistemas, Contabilidad para la toma de decisiones y Negocios, gobierno en un contexto global.
Estos dos párrafos sintetizan en lo que he estado enfocado estos 2 años y que oficialmente se cierra con la graduación en unas horas.
En el día de graduación hay dos activiades. En la mañana hay un desfile de todos los graduandos desde el campus principal de RMIT hasta la plaza central, en donde habra un simple recepción y donde nos tomaremos fotos. En la tarde/noche es el gran momento, la ceremonia de graduación en donde recibiremos nuestros títulos y compartiremos un momento agradable.
Bueno eso es en resumen. Pedí un par de días libres en el trabajo, hoy por las actividades de graduación y mañana para recuperarme de la seguramente bomba que me voy a pegar :).
Ahora… a planchar la camisa y lustrar los zapatos.
Gracias familia por el apoyo en todo momento, me habría gustado que estén por aca pero ya les mantendré al tanto por SMS… ah si y el DVD saldra en unas semanas

¿Cómo es Australia?
Pues es una de las preguntas que muchos se hacen y la verdad es que cada uno puede tener un concepto distinto de acuerdo a lo que ha vivido en el país. Yo diría que es casi imposible cubrir todos los aspectos que uno considera cuando uno piensa, escucha hablar o cuando simplemente se le viene a la mente el país Australia así que me enfocaré en lo que yo pensaba antes y responderé de acuerdo a cómo lo veo ahora, luego de 2.5 años de estar por estos lares.
Empecemos:
1.- Q. Australia es un país caliente, con puro sol y el surf corre en las venas de la gente, ah y que los canguros paran por todo lado
A. “Not quite…” como diríamos. Cada país tiene un estereotipo y pues el de Australia es el mencionado arriba. Lo cierto es que el tema del clima y temperatura depende de donde uno esta. Australia es un continente por si mismo, esto hace que dependiendo del lugar donde uno esté el clima puede ser frío, caliente, estable, loco e impredecible. En mi caso, al vivir en Melbourne, no puedo afirmar que esta ciudad es el paraiso del surf, ni que tiene un clima caluroso. Si uno quiere venir para trabajar, vacacionar, estudiar y desea tener sol todo el año y con un clima de más de 20 grados en promedio, pues lo más recomendable es que vaya a los estados de Queensland y Northern Territory. Melbourne ( capital del estado de Vicotria) tiene un clima muy particular… me explico mejor: ES IMPREDECIBLE. A Melbourne se le conoce por ser la ciudad con 4 estaciones en un día, creo que esto resume este tema. Cuanto más al sur de Australia el clima es más frío y menos estable. En tema de playas, Melbourne tiene en frente a la bahía de Port Phillip la cual no tiene olas y obviamente sin olas no hay surf. Si quieren venir a surfear, toca viajar al menos una hora y media. Si desean una ciudad para surfear casi todo el año, Gold Coast en Queensland podría ser una buena opción. Si hablamos de canguros, los podría comparar con vicuñas en Arequipa, estas no están caminando en las calles sino en praderas alejadas, en reservas y obviametne en el zoologico.
2. Q: Como turista, si vengo seré el bicho raro ya que no soy Australiano… tanto asi como cuando un norteamericano llega a algun país de sudamérica. Trabajaré con Australianos y en la calle veré puros Australianos (obvio, es Australia)
A: Esto puede ser un tanto chocante para muchos… en su momento lo fue para mi. Australia por naturaleza es un país de migrantes y esto ha hecho que uno se tope con gente de, literalmente, casi todas las razas, paises, colores y acentos. Un ejemplo simple, si uno va al centro de Melbourne un sábado por la tarde/noche y se para en medio de la pista… verá una desproporción de nacionalidades impresionante. Uno que llega aca se sorprente y como q se acostumbra rapido luego de pasar por el aeropuerto, llegar al hotel o cuarto alquilado y salir a la bodega… para cuando uno esta en el centro seguramente la idea ya está más clara, pero a veces me pongo a pensar qué interesante sería ver a alguien aparecer en pleno centro de Melbourne de la nada, es decir que el choque sea inmediato… .jaja de sólo escribirlo me da risa. Apuesto a que más de uno diría “Donde estoy? Esto es Australia? Creo que estoy en la China… o tal vez en la India?”. Pues no exagero, no solo en el centro, hay zonas de Melbourne q son como hubs étnicos donde predominan: chinos, arabes, indios, vietamitas, italianos tal vez, griegos, etc. Para nosotros los latinos aún es algo dificil encontra alguien que hable español aunque varios amigos ya me han dicho que estoy equivocado y que ellos escuchan español cada vez más y más… aún no me he llevado esa impresión. El tema de quién es Australiano y qué es ser Australiano lo tocaré en otro momento dado que es un tema bastante amplio y que merece un post aparte… por lo menos. En resumen, si piensas venir a Australia no pienses que serás el “extrajero” porque tu simplemente serás uno más de los MILES q caminen por la misma calle ese mismo día, en ese mismo momento.
3. Q: Los platos típicos Australianos… como serán? debe ser buenisimos.
A: La respuesta es simple. No hay. Australia es un país bastante joven comparado con otros países, la influencia extranjera es tan grande que la sociedad Australiana se ha adaptado a consumir lo que el resto cocina…. asi de simple. No hay un plato típico de Australia y si lo hay encontrarás la manera de sacarle la raíz oriental o europea… osea no. Bocadillos o pastelitos Australianos si hay. Un icono podría ser el pie de carne… muy tradicional y si que llena. En los pubs (donde se va a tomar) normalmente venden chicken parmigiana, un plato italiano que ha sabido ganarse el paladar y gusto de los que van a los bars a tomar tragos y chelas… el mejor complemento de una cerveza… EN SERIO! Chocolates como tim tams son bastante populares, asi como el famoso fish and chips… q es pescado y papas fritas, solo eso… pero es rico. Si me olvido de algo y saben me avisan.
4. Q: Australia es un país excelente para vivir y trabajar.
A: Solo podría asegurar ese tema a nivel de Melbourne dado que no he estado por mas de 3 días en otra ciudad Australiana pero… yo diría que si. Australia y sus condiciones de vida, trabajo, orden, seguridad y economía aun estan muy por encima de cualquier país de sudamérica. Es realmente una pena dado que muchos de nuestros países realmente se merecen esa oportunidad, sabemos que nos rajamos y luchamos por lo que creemos… lamentablemente nuestros sistemas no funcionan como quiseramos y para los que no tenemos muy buenos recursos esto puede trabar nuestro desarrollo profesional y de vida. Me imagino que es ahí cuando uno empieza a evaluar la idea de migrar. Este no es mi caso porque yo vine por estudios pero igual me identifico bastante.
5. Q: Como es la cultura Australiana
A: Esto no requiere un post aparte sino un blog separado. Hay una infinidad de aspectos que uno aprende y aun sigo aprendiendo pero en un resumen bastante incompleto podría decir que la cultura Australiana es basante relajada, en el sentido que la gente es tranquila, no se apresura, no se estresa de la manera que nosotros lo hacemos, los negocios se hacen pero con calma y ganas. El tema de relajarse y pasarla bien es algo muy importante en el mundo laboral australiano. Es una cultura bastante consumidora de cerveza, hay pubs por todo lado y eso no quiere decir que la gente este borracha todo el tiempo sino que es parte del ambiente el festejar, reunirse con colegas, amigos, etc luego del trabajo y pasarla bien antes de ir a casa. El deporte es muy bien visto, respetado y se practica bien hecho, en el sentido de que por ejemplo si me gusta el ciclismo, me compro licra para el pecho, el short, zapatillas de ciclismo con enganche en los pedales, casco, luces para manejar en la noche, etc. Con esto nadie se considera profesional ni mucho menos, simplemente es la manera en que pracitcan los hobbies deportivos, en mi caso…tengo todo menos la licra jaja.
Bueno creo que esta primera parte es suficiente por ahora. Este post si que me ha gustado, muchas de las cosas que he escrito como algo ajeno termine riendome porque lo hago o lo he dicho, en fin, el hecho de vivir en un país distinto al tuyo hace que las costumbres, caracter y personalidad cambien de alguna forma no?… pues si, tiene sentido. No lo veo como malo o como que estoy perdiendo mi peruanidad y esas cosas… son tonterías. Una cosa no va con la otra, creo que nada de lo que haga aca me quita lo peruano y lo que mi país me ha dado desde que nací, éste es simplemente es un proceso de aprendizaje y adaptación.

Traje académico y fotografías
Hoy a medio día me daré una vuelta por RMIT University para recoger el traje académico de graduación y para una supuesta una sesión de fotos. RMIT ha publicado algunos videos sobre las togas y birretes. En el caso de graduados de maestrías éste es el video de la toga (link) y del birrete (link)
